Why Panic Attacks Are on the Rise Among Young Adults

Ever had you a heart that all at once began to skip, and your chest got tight, and that strange-sinking feeling in your stomach? Yeah… that’s a panic attack. And recently, increasingly young adults are experiencing the very same. Frankly, it is frightening, and more so when one cannot even guess where it come froms. The minute you begin to unpack the happenings in the modern world, however, it begins to come into focus a bit.

Life Seems Like It Is Relentless

It is tiring to be in your twenties or early thirties in a way that older people may not be able to imagine. You are at school, work, side projects, dating, bills–and yet, somehow, supposed to have a plan of what you want to be in your whole life. And in the process of all that, there exists this unseen pressure to exhibit the appearance that you have yourself put together. On Instagram, TikTok, or any other social network, everyone’s life appears to be ideal. And when yours doesn’t match that? Well, stress doesn’t politely knock—it barges in.

The Social Media Sneak Attack

I mean, social media isn’t all bad. It keeps us connected, sure. But there’s this subtle, creeping effect it has. Endless feeds, highlight reels, everyone’s “amazing” life—it adds up quietly. You will be mindlessly scrolling the next moment, and then you will be comparing yourself to an online version of someone that does not even exist in reality. The cumulative effect of low-level stress may be an explosion one day. Panic attack.

When Stress Shows Up Physically

The weird thing about panic attacks is that they’re not just “stress.” They’re your body shouting, “Hey! Something’s off here!” Pounding of the heart, light-headedness, inability to breathe, the great fear that something dreadful is going to occur; this is sharp, unpredictable, and to be quite honest, is rather surreal.
