How to Create Calming Environments for Infants on the Go

Image2

It’s one thing to go on a trip with adults. It’s quite another to take an infant with you. But it’s also quite possible to have a positive experience if you’re attentive to your baby’s needs. Remember that infants value routine, and you’ll need to do what you can to establish a calming environment when you’re on the road. Keep reading to uncover some of the best ways to help your little one feel secure!

Control the Lighting Scenarios

Light can affect an infant’s mood and ability to sleep. When you’re not at home, however, it’s harder to control how much or little light enters an environment. If it’s too bright, babies can feel overwhelmed. But exposure to natural light can help set circadian rhythms and promote better sleep patterns.

Bring blackout shades that you can attach to windows or window treatments when you’re traveling. Hotels may have curtains, but you may need more opaque fabric for those daytime naps. As the day progresses, gently ease the lights when you can and consider using mobile red light therapy. This can stimulate melatonin production and create the right mindset for sleep.

When you’re out and about, make sure you’re using a stroller with a canopy. Even better, choose one with a UPF 50+ certification for protection from harsh sunlight. Bring a sunhat and sunglasses, too. And be mindful of sunlight exposure if you’re wearing your baby in a carrier.

Bring the Right Gear

Creating a peaceful environment for your baby doesn’t have to be hard when you’re traveling. When you bring the right gear, you can reduce overstimulation and help your baby feel comfortable in a new place.

Don’t assume that the place where you’re staying will have an appropriate crib or bassinet. Come prepared with your own that is structurally sound and portable. Choose one with mesh sides for better airflow, and make sure to set it up in a space so it is not close to other objects that could potentially fall.

Bring cozy swaddles or familiar blankets for nursing. And use slings or carriers to wear your baby as much as possible. They’ll feel safe when they’re snuggled against a parent or loved one. And you’ll feel good knowing that your little one is secure.

Keep Your Schedule Consistent

Even though you’re in a new place, it’s important to try to stick with routines when possible. This means staying on target with nap times and eating schedules. Getting off schedule can lead to an agitated infant, and that may cost you sleep and contentment throughout the trip.

In new environments, you can introduce some familiar elements or rituals. If you normally read a book before nap time, do that in your hotel room. If your child normally hugs a certain stuffed animal during playtime, bring that animal along for the car or plane rides. And if you sing a particular song before bed, keep doing that regardless of where your baby is sleeping. Infants will appreciate the normalcy that comes with routine.

Try to stay relaxed, too. Babies can pick up on tension if you’re nervous about being in a new place. Keep things easier on yourself by sharing the setup, feeding, or entertainment responsibilities with a partner or another trusted adult who knows your baby well.

Be Flexible

Even with the best planning, things might not go according to schedule when you travel. It might take a long time to receive your orders at a restaurant. You might miss the train or experience a flight delay. No matter what the issue may be, it’s more critical to react calmly. You’re an anchor for your baby, so you’ll want to stay flexible and relaxed.

Offer a familiar stuffed animal or give your baby a back rub. These familiar actions and sensations will help them remain calm, too. Speak in a soothing voice and offer plenty of cuddles to make it through any disruptions.

Help Your Infant Feel Secure

You’ll learn a lot from each journey you take with your little one. Ultimately, you’ll create a sense of comfort by managing lighting, staying consistent with your routines, and being adaptable. You’ll also nurture deeper connections as you and your baby grow together through trips of any duration. When you put your little one first, you’ll set the foundation for a positive experience no matter what comes your way.
