With a seven-try thrashing of a depleted Wales, New Zealand reclaimed the top spot in the global rankings.
Beauden Barrett’s two tries, as well as scores from TJ Perenara, Will Jordan, Dalton Papalii, Sevu Reece, and Anton Lienert-Brown, as well as 19 goals from Jordie Barrett, clinched the victory.
Wales, who were heavily thrashed, were led by Johnny Williams, who scored the lone try.
Alun Wyn Jones, the captain, and Ross Moriarty have joined the hosts’ long list of injured players.
Jones was taken off in the 18th minute after tackling Jordie Barrett, earning his 149th Wales cap and overtaking former New Zealand captain Richie McCaw’s record for one nation.
Jones’ left shoulder was injured in the summer against Japan, but he remarkably recovered to lead the Lions to a three-Test series loss against South Africa, and he was replaced by Will Rowlands, with Jonathan Davies taking over as captain.
Wales’ hunt for a win against the All Blacks continues.
Wales’ 68-year losing streak against New Zealand was extended with this defeat.
Few expected the All Blacks to win for the first time since 1953, but New Zealand pulled away in the last quarter with some beautiful tries engineered by man-of-the-match Beauden Barrett, who was playing in his 100th international match.
Wales were without 20 players due to injury, including British and Irish Lions Ken Owens, George North, Leigh Halfpenny, Josh Navidi, Justin Tipuric, Dan Lydiate, and Liam Williams, as well as Cardiff centre Willis Halaholo, who was unavailable due to Covid-19.
Because the match was played outside of World Rugby’s international window, Wales were unable to use their England-based club players Dan Biggar, Taulupe Faletau, Nick Tompkins, Louis Rees-Zammit, Callum Sheedy, Thomas Young, and Christ Tshiunza.
New Zealand, on the other hand, had a nearly full-strength team and came into the contest fresh off winning the Rugby Championship and scoring 104 points against the USA.
New Zealand has reclaimed the top spot in the global rankings after a resounding win in Cardiff.
The Welsh Rugby Union (WRU) claimed a sellout of 74,500 for a game that generated £4 million. It was the first game at Principality Stadium that could handle maximum crowds since February 2020.
Not out by a long shot.
Fly-half Gareth Anscombe was in close competition with Beauden Barrett, who became the 11th All Blacks player to reach 100 caps.
The match took place ten years after the two were teammates on the New Zealand Under-20s team that won the Junior World Championships 92-0 against Wales.
Anscombe, who qualifies for Wales via his mother, has fought back from a two-year layoff after a catastrophic knee injury sustained against England in August 2019. He’d barely played three league games before facing off against his native country.
Barrett, on the other hand, had a dream start after intercepting a ball from his opposing number and cantering across with his brother Jordie converting.
After fine effort at the breakdown from flanker Taine Basham on his maiden Wales start, Anscombe calmed down with an early penalty.
Against Wales, the Barrett brothers scored 29 points.
Beauden Barrett was adjudged to have intentionally knocked down Owen Lane’s inside ball to Johnny Williams after a spectacular break by Aaron Wainwright from his own line.
French referee Mathieu Raynal did not give the New Zealand fly-half a yellow card.
Jordie Barrett restored the seven-point lead when Wainwright was penalized for not rolling away, then added a second penalty after New Zealand prop Nepo Laulala wasted a try-scoring chance after Wales skipper Jones was forced out.
The All Blacks profited as scrum-half Perenara powered through with the roof open due to Covid-19 restrictions and the rain began to pour heavy.
Despite New Zealand’s dominance, Basham stood out for his contact area turnover work and joyous ball-carrying.
Moriarty, a Dragons back-row teammate, was hauled out when Laulala failed to wrap his shoulder and smacked the Wales flanker on the head.
With Moriarty having dipped into touch and Ethan Blackadder’s tackle impacting Laulala’s challenge, referee Mathieu Raynal determined it was not a red card, and the prop was given a yellow card. Moriarity was pulled off and Cardiff’s Seb Davies took his place.
However, Wales’ dreadful line-out proved to be a hindrance. Anscombe added a second penalty to cut the halftime lead to 18-6, but Jordie Barrett scored three more points early in the second half to put the game out of reach.
For the first time in four years, Rhys Priestland took over for Anscombe and made an instant impact by slotting over a penalty.
Rieko Ioane and David Havili warned Wales about their sloppy kicking before wing Jordan brilliantly counter-attacked to gather his own chip and cross for the All Blacks’ third try.
Wales eventually scored a try, thanks to Priestland’s excellent chip kick, which was seized on by center Williams.
After trailing by 12 points after 61 minutes, the All Blacks pulled away with a devastating exhibition of running rugby in the last quarter, scoring four tries.
New Zealand was merciless, scoring two touchdowns in a row, with flanker Papalii and substitute Reece, and the assault continued with a sixth try for centre Lienert-Brown.
Beauden Barrett’s second interception attempt, this time latching onto a wayward ball from an otherwise excellent Johnny McNicholl, clinched the victory and brought the score past 50 points.
