Penguin Classics announced the latest installment in its Marvel Super Heroes series, which includes a collection of comics starring iconic comic book heroes like Spider-Man and The X-Men.
Marvel Comics was created in 1939 by Timely Publications. The company is now owned by Disney, but it still remains one of the most popular comic book companies in the world.
With their new cooperation, Penguin Classics is bringing some classic Marvel Comics to fans. This is the first time the book publisher has ventured into the comics realm. Penguin is publishing anthologies based on famous Marvel characters such as Spider-Man, Black Panther, and Captain America. The trio of heroes will hit shop shelves on June 14, 2022. All three characters have become pop culture icons, and now younger readers can read about some of their most pivotal experiences in one easy-to-read book. Each of them will be available in both hardcover collectors editions and paperbacks with a black spine. There are also academic introductions and forewords by well-known young adult writers, which explain why these heroes are so significant.
Jason Reynolds, the 2021 National Ambassador for Young People’s Literature, is a Spider-Man fan. Black Panther is being directed by Nnedi Okorafor, the award-winning author of Who Fears Death. Gene Luen Yang, an American-born Chinese novelist, will be honored as Captain America. The series’ editor, Ben Saunders, is in charge of the academic introductions for Captain America and Spider-Man. He is an English professor at the University of Oregon. (He even started a Comics Studies undergraduate minor there!!!) The introduction for Black Panther will be given by Qiana J. Whitted, Professor of English and African American Studies at the University of South Carolina. (As a scholar, she’s also won an Eisner!)

“The Marvel comics of the 1960s are comparable to the greatest lasting popular music of the same turbulent decade. Marvel’s creators pioneered and participated in an artistic revolution, working at breakneck pace in what was usually seen as a low-status commercial medium “According to Marvel.com, Saunders remarked. “From current authors to hip hop musicians to Hollywood directors, these comics have impacted writers and artists across all kinds of media. These vintage Marvel Comics are cornerstone texts of our civilization, and that is not exaggeration.”
“From The Odyssey to The Time Machine, the Penguin Classics list honors the greatest works of literature while also placing them in their historical and cultural contexts. Spider-Man, Black Panther, and Captain America have become staples in a slew of media tales, and it’s a tribute to Marvel’s writers and artists that these characters still connect so powerfully today “Sven Larsen, Marvel Entertainment’s Vice President of Licensed Publishing, noted. “It’s an incredible pleasure to have these pivotal moments in Marvel’s history join this prestigious Penguin Random House series. I’m looking forward to new readers discovering these tales for the first time, and I’m also looking forward to current fans reading the new introductions, essays, and other material that will help them appreciate these essential works of visual fiction even more.”
