PITTSBURGH (KDKA) — After Pat Freiermuth’s overtime fumble, Najee Harris returned to the bench to compose himself for the Steelers’ next offensive drive. The only issue is that there would be no more Pittsburgh possessions.
The Detroit Lions (0-8-1) attempted a sequence of laterals in the dying seconds of Sunday’s game to break the 16-16 tie, but D’Andre Swift was shoved out of bounds, ending the game in the NFL’s first tie since Week 3 of the 2020 season.
Even yet, it wasn’t until a teammate informed him it was done that the rookie running back realized it was finished.
“I had no idea you could tie in the NFL,” Harris said. “‘I’ve got another quarter to go,’ I was thinking as I sat on the bench. But then someone remarked to me, ‘That’s it.’ I’ve never worn a tie before in my life.”
Harris wasn’t the only one surprised by the quick, disappointing conclusion.

Godwin Igwebuike, the Lions’ second-year running back, described the situation as “crazy.” “‘Yo, how many overtimes can we do?’ I’m back there. And they’re all like, ‘Three…’ ‘Two, one,’ I heard, and we were like, ‘Yo, whatever’s going on, we’re about to throw all we’ve got into it.’”
The Lions escaped a 0-17 season with the draw, but they are still on a 13-game losing run dating back to last season.
Dan Campbell, the Lions’ coach, remarked, “I’m in this twilight zone.” “I have no idea what this is, and I’m sure I’ve been in a tie as a player before, but for some reason I can’t recall it if it was.”
Steelers defensive captain Cam Heyward added, “Ties stink.” “I understand it’s a tie, but if it’s not a victory, I don’t believe you can put your hat on it.”
For both sides, the last ten minutes were a comedy of mistakes.
The Lions won the coin toss and chose to receive, knowing that all they needed was a touchdown to win. Instead, the Steelers (5-3) recovered the ball in four plays, with a 9-yard Heyward sack sealing the victory. On the next play, quarterback Mason Rudolph, who was filling in for Ben Roethlisberger, delivered a 19-yard throw to Diontae Johnson, but Johnson lost the ball, which the Lions recovered.
Johnson said, “I was simply trying to make a play.” “In that scenario, you do what everyone else would do: you grab the ball like that, you attempt to make a play for the team, you get them in excellent field position. I didn’t see the man approaching from behind.”
With an interception by Minkah Fitzpatrick on the following play, Lions quarterback Jared Goff looked to hand the ball back to the Steelers, but a defensive holding penalty on Devin Bush invalidated it. Instead, Ryan Santoso missed a 48-yard field goal, which had been lifted a day earlier after kicker Austin Seibert was placed on injured reserve.
On the second play of the following series, a high snap from center Kendrick Green to Rudolph ruined the drive, but the Lions accomplished nothing with their next possession.
With 1 minute, 37 seconds left, the Steelers received the ball back and crossed midfield. Rudolph connected with Freiermuth for a 1-yard gain on first down from the Detroit 39, but safety Will Harris forced a turnover, which was recovered by linebacker Trey Flowers.
According to ESPN Stats & Information, the Steelers became the first team since at least 2000 to lose two fumbles in a single overtime session with Freiermuth’s fumble. Since 1978, the Steelers are the 16th club to commit multiple turnovers in overtime.
The Lions were unable to make a play on the last play, resulting in a stalemate.
“When you go to the locker room in the NFL, a tie always feels like a defeat because you’re not adding one to the victory column,” Steelers linebacker Joe Schobert said. “It’s just half of a game. In the end, it could make a difference. It hurts a lot to let it slip away when you’re so near.”
