In recent seasons, the championship has witnessed a significant increase in attention, and many believe that a native driver is what the sport needs to go further.
Patrick, a commentator for Sky Sport’s F1 coverage of the US Grand Prix this weekend, agrees.
“It’s 100 percent.” Patrick told ESPN before of this week’s event, “You nailed it.” “If it’s going to acquire momentum in the United States, the supporters here will need someone to root for.”
“And although there are certainly some fantastic characters in Formula One right now, it means a little bit more when they’re from the area or from home.” When you reside in a city, like Indianapolis, and support the Colts, there’s a reason to support a team. There is no reason to applaud for a driver in racing.
“For example, just because I grew up in Illinois didn’t mean I had all of Illinois behind me; you had to get to know the people. As a result, the more well-known they are and the more exposure they get, the larger their following will be.”

Patrick believes that her personal racing experience demonstrates how crucial a favorable or unfavorable setting may be for a rising star — Patrick qualified fourth as a rookie for the 2005 Indianapolis 500 and came close to winning the race, making her a household name. She feels that a driver’s success is often determined by circumstances rather than aptitude.
“You never know how the transition from one series to the next, or from one level to the next, will proceed.” You see a lot of drivers that haven’t achieved much in the past and now you’re thinking, “Wow, they’re fantastic.”
“Then you see it go the other way, when they win everything, transition, and don’t seem to work out as well.” So that’s the shift you have to understand: how does a driver adjust not only in terms of the automobile but also in terms of his or her mind?
“Pressure has a variety of effects on individuals. What is their ability to manage transitions and varied exposure levels, as well as what are their needs as a driver, and what is their potential like? Is the vehicle in decent condition?
“Is it a year where… I feel that the perfect situation to come into a year, like it occurred to me in 2005 when I did my first year in IndyCar, those cars were so quick.” I came close to qualifying for pole and winning the Indy 500 for the first time.
“That year, I just had a few poles.” I was lightning quick. It establishes your credibility as a driver because you’re like, “Of course she can drive.” But what if I or anybody else arrives in a year and the automobile isn’t in excellent working order? Is it now them? Because that’ll be the first thing people point the finger at.
“If you don’t perform well, the driver will be the first to be criticized, especially if they’re new. As a result, it is highly dependent on the year and the car’s competitiveness.”
The US Grand Prix will be shown live on ABC on October 24 at 1.30 p.m.
